Sarah Wegener

She has also appeared at major festivals such as Salzburg, Vienna, Schwetzingen, Oxford, Rheingau, Schleswig-Holstein, and Lanaudière. In the 2025/26 season, Sarah Wegener turns her focus to major works by Strauss, Wagner, and Mahler. She performs Strauss’s Four Last Songs with the Essen Philharmonic and reprises the role of Sieglinde in Die Walküre—both with the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra under Patrick Hahn and in concert performances with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig under Andris Nelsons, followed by an extensive tour of China. With the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, she appears in excerpts from Strauss’s Arabella, and sings Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 8 with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra at the Wiener Konzerthaus. As a recitalist, she moves audiences in Liederabende (song recitals) at venues including the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the Cologne Philharmonie. On the opera stage, she has earned acclaim for roles such as Sieglinde and Freia, with performances at the Royal Opera House London, the State Opera in Prague, Deutsche Oper Berlin, and the Saarländisches Staatstheater. Sarah Wegener has a particularly strong affinity for contemporary music and frequently works closely with living composers. She also makes a striking impact in the symphonic repertoire, with interpretations of works by Schönberg, Sibelius, Penderecki, and Widmann. Her discography reflects this artistic breadth. Her albums Into the Deepest Sea and Zueignung have received multiple awards. For her interpretation of song arrangements by B.A. Zimmermann, she was awarded the Choc de Classica and the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Her recording of Jörg Widmann’s Drittes Labyrinth was nominated for the OPUS Klassik award. Sarah Wegener studied voice with Isolde Assenheimer and Prof. Bernhard Jäger-Böhm in Stuttgart and honed her craft in masterclasses with Dame Gwyneth Jones and Renée Morloc. Originally trained as a double bassist, she brings a distinctive musical depth and sensitivity to her interpretations. Since 2024, she has shared her experience and passion as Professor of Voice at the Zurich University of the Arts.

Wegener [proved that she is a very a fine ] Straussian, with a warm tone, and a telling yet understated way with words, which enabled her to suggest both the cool sensuality of ‘Freundliche Vision’, and the vulnerability of ‘Allerseelen’. […] She did wonderful things with ‘Morgen!’, where her voice hovered in dreamy contemplation over the unfolding violin melody.

SCHEDULE

UPCOMING
PAST
There‘s a particular moment early on when one of the three soprano soloists has to float a high
note effortlessly above a chorus of praise to the Almighty. If it comes off, you know the
performance is likely to be good, and on this occasion it was truly wonderful - though honours for
that must be shared with soprano Sarah Wegener.
